Guarantees of Origin
Within the ongoing electricity market reform in the country, and with the aim of promoting renewable energy and ensuring market transparency, the Guarantee of Origin (GO) system is successfully operating at Georgian State Electrosystem. The system is based on international best practices and is administered through the Grexel platform.
GSE is an observer member of the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB Hub), which ensures harmonization with European standards and increases the credibility and transparency of GO certificates.
In addition, the Energy Community has significantly supported the development of the certificate system. This organization actively contributes to aligning national energy markets with EU standards and further developing the system, as well as supporting the recognition of GO certificates issued by member states within the European Union. This will, in the future, provide local producers with broader opportunities for integration into the European energy market and for exporting GO certificates.
A Guarantee of Origin (GO) is an electronic certificate that proves that electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources — such as hydro, wind, solar, or others. One certificate is issued per 1 MWh of electricity produced. GOs are traded independently of the physical electricity, allowing companies to verify “green” consumption regardless of actual electricity supply.
As the issuing body, GSE places special importance on the active involvement of market participants.
These certificates are intended to support the development of renewable energy sources and to promote the use of renewable energy by both electricity suppliers and consumers.
The use of GOs helps companies to:
- Verify “green” energy consumption
- Reduce their carbon footprint
- Contribute to the country’s sustainable development.
An account in the GO certificate registry can be opened based on an application submitted electronically by the applicant to the Transmission System Operator at the following email address: onise.chichinadze@gse.com.ge.
