USAID/Caucasus Mission Director Visited Akhaltsikhe 500 Substation

John Pennell, the Director of the Caucasus Mission of the United States Agency for International Development, and other high-ranking representatives of USAID visited the substation Akhaltsikhe 500 of the Georgian State Electrosystem, got acquainted with the substation and the principles of operation of the HVDCs installed there.

At the Akhaltsikhe substation, John Pennell was hosted by Tornike Kazarashvili, a member of the Supervisory Board of Georgian State Electrosystem and Zviad Gachechiladze, a member of the Board of Directors.

Georgian and American colleagues reviewed the ongoing projects in cooperation with the USAID program of the Georgian electric power network and outlined the ways of future cooperation.

The substation Akhaltsikhe 500 is one of the key substations of GSE, which has a strategic importance from the point of view of electricity exchange. The substation has two 350 MW HVDCs.

Due to the strategic importance of Akhaltsikhe 500, it is planned to arrange the third block of HVDC, which will allow Georgia to increase electricity exchange with Turkey to 1050 MW.
